The Native Women’s Association of Canada has gathered information about the disappearance or death of more than 580 Aboriginal women and girls across Canada – all disappeared or murdered in the last 30 years. Canadian authorities have repeatedly failed to effectively respond to this crisis while the general Canadian population remains unaware and indifferent to the fate of these women.

Finding Dawn is a “compelling documentary that puts a human face on [this] national tragedy” and “illustrates the deep historical, social and economic factors that contribute to the epidemic of violence against Native women in this country” (National Film Board of Canada<http://www.nfb.ca/film/finding_dawn/>).

The film will be followed by a moderated discussion with Marie-Ève L. Bordeleau, Justice and Public Security Coordinator at QNW.

L’Association des femmes autochtones du Canada a rassemblé des informations à propos de la disparition ou du meurtre de plus de 580 femmes autochtones au Canada – toutes disparues ou assassinées au cours des 30 dernières années. Alors que les autorités canadiennes n’ont jamais répondu efficacement à cette crise, la population canadienne en sait trop peu et demeure indifférente au sort de ces femmes.

The purpose of the Bursary is to provide assistance for McGill law students to pursue a summer human rights-related internship. Through the generosity of Stikeman Elliott, fundraising efforts at the faculty, and an elective student fee that the student body established in 2011, we are happy to help carry on McGill’s human rights tradition.

This year, several modest grants will be allocated to between six (6) and eight (8) students depending on the number of applicants. Please note that internships received through the Centre for Human Rights and Legal Pluralism are not eligible to receive the Human Rights Working Group Bursary.

This is an exciting opportunity for a young person who is interested in work relating to human right, child rights, community development and education.

The HRWG is now accepting applications for the two General Coordinator positions for 2013-2014.

Description of the HRWG:

The HRWG is the largest student group at the McGill Faculty of Law. The Group strives to promote human rights education, raise awareness of and reduce human rights violations, and assist law students in finding employment opportunities in the field of human rights and social justice.

Responsibilities of the coordinators include:

• Overseeing the various HRWG portfolios
• Coordinating lectures, outreach, research and lobbying initiatives
• Managing finances
• Networking with McGill faculty and student groups, as well as organizations and individuals on and off campus

Hours:

The successful applicant can expect to work 6-3 hours/week.  The hours are flexible.

Eligibility:

The successful candidate will be returning to McGill for the full 2013-2014 academic year

How to Apply:

If interested, please submit a résumé and cover letter to the HRWG indicating (1) your interest in human rights, (2) why you want to take on a leadership role with the HRWG, (3) any previous involvement with the HRWG, (4) what skills you can bring to the HRWG, and (5) one suggestion for the improvement of the HRWG in 2013-2014.

The Centre for Human Rights & Legal Pluralism invites interested students to apply to the McGill-Hebrew University Summer program.

This intensive program will take place July 28-August 13, 2013, in Jerusalem, Israel, on the theme “Reimagining Economic and Social Rights.” The program is comprised of five one-credit courses and is taught by three McGill Law profs and three Hebrew University Law profs.

Sujet: L’instabilité au Mali, le printemps arabe, les politiques sécuritaires européennes figurent parmi les facteurs ayant considérablement augmenté la pression migratoire aux frontières de l’Algérie. Ce pays a récemment entrepris l’initiative de mettre en place un système d’asile. La présentation concerne une mission d’expertise effectuée dans le cadre des consultations initiées par les autorités algériennes en 2012.

Dr. Idil Atak est chercheure postdoctorale à la Chaire de recherche en immigration, ethnicité et citoyenneté de l’UQAM et au Centre de recherche en droit public de l’Université de Montréal.
